Excerpt:

Something about the woman’s manner rankled Jan.  After a few moments she realized why: this woman sounded just like her mother-in-law.

“Ma’am, you really shouldn’t be in this line,” Jan said a little more forcefully.  “And I’m sure you’ve got a lot to do, but you’re not the only one who’s busy.”

Excerpt:

I don’t know how long I lay next to the bed on the floor.  I felt like I lay on a sheet of dust.  The floor had not been swept yet.  I got dust in my throat, and I felt on the verge of a cough.  But I held my breath.  I did not want the thing that had made those shots to come for me.  I did not want to get shot and die.  I was only ten years old then.  Life could not end in such a blunt way.

Excerpt:

“Wha—what?  What are you talking about?”

“I know why you need me here, and I don’t think it’s going to help.  Please find someone else to take care of me, and then find yourself a new place to live.”
