I recognized most of the pictures as the images resting in my memory, but several of them contained something I knew I hadn’t shot that afternoon.  I stared at a few of the finished pictures to confirm my suspicions, and suddenly I couldn’t develop the rest of the roll fast enough.

She took the jewelry box from me and took the little navy book out of the drawer.  Putting the box back down on the table with barely a second glance, she held the book close to her heart and closed her eyes in reverence.

“It’s Gordon’s passport.”

As she changed her clothes, something registered in her memory.  When she left the bathroom with her backpack slung over one shoulder, she confirmed it: on the way back down the hallway, Katie spotted the half-open door to Adam’s parents’ bedroom.  Suddenly, Katie had an urge to take a look.

When I met Peter, nothing about me, inside of me, around me remained safe.  Everything had turned into a risk.  And I felt alive.  Giddy, even.
