She smiled at the small, enthusiastic group gathered for the book signing. Her husband’s arm came around her, squeezed with pride. Her cheeks flushed; they exchanged a grin.
Looking back, she saw someone enter the store. She blinked twice, three times, and the face became familiar. Of course she knew that face. Those eyes. That mouth.
The mouth had whispered “I love you” in her ears for the first time ever. The eyes had sought hers across the basketball court after wins and losses. The face had turned away from her shattered heart.
Her husband squeezed again. She came back to the present. Pen in hand, she was ready to sign the book.
