They waited together as the laptop hummed and whirred. After several moments it went straight to the home screen without bothering to ask for a password.
Someone had left a word processing program running the last time the computer had been used. The girls began reading the document that opened in front of them.
“I left about two years ago, and I’ve only gotten the hearing back in one ear.”
I’d noticed the hearing aid in her left ear during dessert, but I didn’t know if I could really ask about it while we broke the crusts on our crème brulee.
“Um…I’m sorry, Lizzie, I don’t know what to say. I’ve never really run into anything like this.”
Tessa didn’t know. Well, she did, but she didn’t. She knew that her dad wasn’t coming back, but she didn’t know why. She knew that moving to Grandma Sharon’s was supposed to be a good thing, but she didn’t know what “starting fresh” meant.
The one thing she did know, though, was the secret of the animals.
